When setting up or scaling a Shopify store, one of the most frequently asked questions is: "Does Shopify take a cut from every sale?" The answer depends on the payment method you use. In this guide, we've clearly outlined Shopify's transaction fees, rates by plan, and currency conversion costs.
Does Shopify Take a Percentage Commission on Sales?
Shopify does not charge a single, fixed "commission" per sale. The commission rates vary depending on your location and whether you use Shopify Payments or a third-party payment provider.
If you use Shopify Payments: No additional transaction fee is charged by Shopify. You only pay the credit card/payment processing rate.
If you use a third-party payment provider: In addition to your provider's own fees, Shopify also charges a separate "additional transaction fee."
Note: Shopify Payments is not yet available in Turkey. As a result, Turkish merchants using local payment providers such as iyzico or PayTR will be subject to Shopify's additional transaction fee — making it a significant cost factor in plan selection.
Additional Transaction Fees by Shopify Plan
When using a third-party payment provider, the additional transaction fee Shopify charges varies depending on your plan:
|
Plan |
Additional Transaction Fee |
|
Basic |
2.0% |
|
Shopify |
1.0% |
|
Advanced |
0.6% |
|
Plus |
0.2% |
As you move to a higher plan, the transaction fee rate decreases. At high sales volumes, the savings this creates can easily justify the cost of upgrading. For example, for a store with monthly revenue of $20,000, the 1.4% difference between Basic and Advanced translates to $280 per month in transaction fees alone. This is why, when choosing a Shopify plan, it's important to look not just at the subscription cost but at the overall impact of transaction fees on your total expenses.
Shopify Currency Conversion Fee (For International Sales)
If you're expanding into international markets and accepting payments in multiple currencies, currency conversion fees must also be factored in. In regions where Shopify Payments is active, a currency conversion fee may apply when a transaction is processed in a currency different from your payout currency.
For all other Shopify Payments regions, this rate is 2%.
Note: If you plan to use the multi-currency feature, make sure to include this cost in your profit margin calculations.
How to View Your Shopify Store's Credit Card Rate
If you're using Shopify Payments, you can check your store-specific credit card processing rate directly in Shopify Admin:
-
Go to Shopify Admin > Payments.
-
Under the Shopify Payments section, view the credit card rate / fees field.
Since this rate can vary by store, checking your own admin panel — rather than relying on general tables — will give you a more accurate picture of your costs.
Which Shopify Payment Method Should You Use?
The answer largely depends on your country and sales volume. Since Shopify Payments is not yet available in Turkey, using a third-party provider is mandatory for Turkish merchants. This makes plan selection even more critical: higher-tier plans with lower transaction fee rates can offset the difference in subscription cost once you reach a certain revenue level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shopify automatically take a commission from every sale?
No. If you use Shopify Payments, only the card processing rate applies. If you use a third-party provider, Shopify's additional transaction fee also kicks in.
Is Shopify Payments available in Turkey?
No, Shopify Payments is currently not available in Turkey. Turkish merchants must use local providers such as iyzico or PayTR, in which case an additional transaction fee of 2%, 1%, or 0.6% applies depending on the plan.
Does upgrading to a more expensive plan reduce transaction fees?
Yes. Higher-tier plans come with lower additional transaction fee rates. For high-revenue stores, this difference can more than cover the cost of upgrading over time.
Are there extra fees for international sales?
In regions where Shopify Payments is active, a 2% currency conversion fee may apply when payments are received in a different currency.
